Nordic Business Forum 2024

One of the most anticipated highlights of the business year, Nordic Business Forum, was held at Helsinki Expo and Convention Centre on 25–26 September 2024. This year was also a special anniversary as we were the official interpreting partner of the seminar for the eleventh time in a row.

Nordic Business Forum gathered together more than 6,500 participants from 40 countries, and almost 30,000 people followed the event via live stream. The two-day seminar included presentations by world-class thinkers, premium tips and intensive networking.

Delingua has offered professional simultaneous interpreting to seminar participants since the early years of the event. This year was the first time that our parent company LanguageWire was the official NBF interpreting partner. All presentations on the main stage were interpreted simultaneously from English into Finnish, Estonian, Swedish, Latvian and Lithuanian.

This year, we also had our own stand at the seminar, where we introduced LanguageWire’s extensive translation, interpreting and language technology services in more detail. One of the biggest attractions at our stand was our LEGO activity, which offered participants the opportunity to relax and build something concrete.

It will soon be time for one of the absolute highlights of the business year: Nordic Business Forum 2024 at Messukeskus in Helsinki.

The event is again expected to attract more than 6,500 participants from many different countries, as well as nearly 30,000 livestream followers. The event features presentations by the world’s leading thinkers, excellent business tips and intensive networking.

LanguageWire is there, of course

Delingua has acted as Nordic Business Forum’s official interpreting partner since the early years of the event. This year, it will be the first time that our new parent company LanguageWire acts the interpreting partner. All presentations on the main stage will be interpreted from English into Finnish, Estonian, Swedish, Latvian and Lithuanian.

Offer interpreting at your next event

Technological development, combined with more environmentally sustainable practices, has led to more and more events, both small and large, taking place remotely. As an increasing number of events offer the opportunity of remote participation, the need for remote simultaneous interpreting has also increased.

Simultaneous interpreting is an interpreting method in which the interpreter interprets into another language at the same time as the speaker is speaking. It is exactly this idea of everything happening at the same time that sets simultaneous interpreting apart from other forms of interpreting in which the speaker and the interpreter take turns speaking. Remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) also makes it possible to offer interpreting for virtual and hybrid events.

After reading this article, you will know what it takes to arrange simultaneous interpreting for an international virtual or hybrid event and why offering interpreting is an asset for both the company and the event participant.

Simultaneous interpreting at the Europe Forum

Delingua has been the interpreting partner of the Europe Forum for the past two years. This year, after last summer’s change of ownership, we provided simultaneous interpreting as part of the LanguageWire group. The event took place in Turku on 28–30 August 2024.

At an international event such as the Europe Forum, interpreting plays a key role, with topics such as politics, finance and science concerning people across geographical boundaries. All programme sections in Finnish and Swedish were interpreted simultaneously into English, which made it possible for a wider audience to participate in the EU discussion.

This year was exceptional at the Europe Forum as it was the first time interpreting took place completely remotely. The event was a hybrid event, which meant that participants could listen to simultaneous interpreting both on site with a mobile phone app and live online.

“Together with Rajupaja’s AV team and our partner Interprefy, we were able to achieve a technical solution that served the participants both remotely and on site,” says Anneli Waris, Interpreting Services Manager.

Organising simultaneous interpreting for a three-day event as large as the Europe Forum requires both technical and professional competence. A successful event is based on good preliminary work and close cooperation between the parties.

“It goes without saying that organising such a massive three-day event requires coordination with the customer and the technology partners, as well as insight into what is being done. By going through the details carefully, we can make sure that everyone knows what is happening and how it is done,” says Anneli.

Simultaneous interpreting can also be arranged remotely

The need for RSI has grown at a rapid rate in recent years. Technological development, combined with more environmentally sustainable practices, has led to more and more events, both small and large, taking place remotely – in practice, online.

Thanks to advanced technology, interpreting can be conveniently provided via an app that any participant can download to their phone free of charge. During hybrid events, participants can listen to interpreting either at the venue via a mobile phone app or as a live stream online. RSI can be arranged on various digital platforms, such as Teams or Zoom.

As an increasing number of events offer the possibility of remote participation, the need for remote simultaneous interpreting has also increased. So why not offer interpreting for your virtual event as well?

Interpreting benefits both the company and the participant

It is important to remember that good language skills are not always enough. At an international event, speeches and presentations may be superficially understood, but the nuances of the language, the deep meaning of the message or the quick speech of a native speaker, for example, might not be fully understood. It is clear that without professional interpreting, not all participants get the most out of the event. By offering interpreting in different languages, you not only create new business opportunities but also show that you take the audience’s multilingualism into account.

“Organising interpreting for your own event is a good way of making it clear that every participant matters to your company. Understanding and becoming understood creates added value and can, at best, contribute to an overall sense of belonging. When all the information has been shared and understood correctly, it is also possible to build a better vision of the future and the direction in which society is heading. Interpreting is a valuable tool – so make good use of it!” says Anneli.

Boost your business with interpreting

A typical situation in which the business world relies on interpreters is a head-on collision with a language barrier. This can happen when your company receives guests from another culture, such as China, and you simply do not have any common language. It is self-evident that without a professional interpreter, such a business meeting would yield no results.

However, I would venture to say that interpreting is useful in other business-related situations, too. Even when everyone can use English – more or less fluently. Below, you will find some good reasons to arrange interpreting also for other business situations.

1. Remember that someone may genuinely need interpreting

We often assume that everyone can use at least English. However, the truth is that the ability to speak foreign languages varies just as much as the ability to do maths. The threshold for revealing your own insufficient language skills may also be high.

Interpreting gives everyone an equal opportunity to understand and participate in the discussion. What is crucial is expertise, not language skills.

2. Increase the efficiency of communications

Insufficient language skills can lead to misunderstandings. It can be difficult to find the right words or you cannot express yourself as clearly as in your native language. Good language skills alone are not always enough: there are different accents, difficult abbreviations or culture-specific metaphors, which are something that professional interpreters are trained in.

In a Forbes survey, more than half of companies (65%) admitted that insufficient language skills lead to inefficiency and lower productivity in business. Learning languages certainly helps, but it is slow when compared to using interpreting at key events.

3. Create more business

The more languages you use in your business, the wider the audience you invite to participate and the more business opportunities you create.

A webinar in Finnish about your company’s new services will reach only Finnish speakers and perhaps some others who happen to know some Finnish, whereas including interpreting in Swedish will improve your company’s business opportunities in the Swedish market as well. With remote interpreting, it is very easy to add interpreting in almost any language to almost any remote meeting platform.

4. Improve the customer experience

By providing interpreting in different languages, you not only create new business opportunities but also show that you take into account the variety of languages among your customers. This means you can improve both communications and the customer experience.

A brilliant example of recognising the benefits of interpreting in business and putting the customer experience at centre stage is Nordic Business Forum: Although this mega business seminar organised in Helsinki will be held entirely in English, all main stage presentations will be interpreted simultaneously into Finnish, Swedish, Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian. By providing interpreting in these languages, the organiser welcomes participants from these language areas, giving them special consideration among the more than 6,500 participants. The number of participants from these countries will increase and new business opportunities will emerge.

5. Be a pioneer, try AI interpreting

Given the level of hype about AI, a true pioneer will provide AI interpreting in appropriate situations instead of no interpreting at all.

This kind of interpreting is handled entirely with the aid of computers: speech recognition software converts source-language speech into text and the machine translation engine translates the text, which is then converted into target-language speech.

Naturally, the above-mentioned entirely technology-based interpreting is an alternative that does not fully replace a professional human interpreter in all situations. However, it is undeniable that in some language pairs, the output quality is already quite high. Entirely technology-based interpreting is extremely cost-efficient and a good option when the language pair and the interpreting situation allow it and when the alternative would be to not arrange interpreting at all.
